Rocking the Stairway

“There’s only so many notes on a f*cking guitar!”. Those are the eloquent words of one Ozzy Osbourne, when asked his opinion about the recent legal victory for Led Zeppelin. As you may have heard, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were hauled into a Los Angeles courtroom for a plagiarism suit brought by the estate of Randy Wolfe of the American band Spirit. The suit alleged that Led Zeppelin stole from Wolfe the iconic opening guitar chords of Zep’s famous epic song “Stairway to Heaven”As many people predicted, Led Zeppelin was exonerated.

If you crave more of Ozzy’s assessment of this matter go to this Rolling Stone article to read the rest of his profanity-laced interview 😆

Also, I blogged about this topic – Led Zeppelin and their copyright infringement issues – in a Museworthy post from 2014 for anyone who might be interested.

A reminder to everyone that submissions are open for the Museworthy Portraits and Pets art show. I haven’t set a date for the show yet so of course you still have time. But do feel free to send your piece whenever you’re ready. Everyone is welcome to participate! I’m still working on mine 🙂

I’ll be back very soon with another blog post. In the meantime, here is Led Zeppelin, in their prime, performing “Stairway to Heaven” live. Robert Plant is in full “golden god” glory, and Jimmy Page is pure rock and roll. Around 9:52 is my favorite part. For Music Monday:

O.M.G. – Robert Plant just knowing that he was the most beautiful creature on the planet at that moment in time! This song always takes me back to Sixth Form College, when Andrew and Sarah – both with long blonde hair and the most beautiful people of my acquaintance – would play it on repeat through the lunch hour in the art dept …

Oh yes, Robert Plant is quite the sexy, charismatic figure here 😉 This performance and period (1973) is really them at their peak. I love your memories of the song and your art school friends!

Thanks for sharing and for commenting.

I heard the Spirit song and the Led Zeppelin song and there are nothing that supports the band plagiarizing the song. It doesn’t make any sense. There is an opening opus which starts like a power ballad and the the other half has the hard rock guitar sections provided by Jimmy. He was a genius with the riffs just like Ritchie Blackmore was with Deep Purple and Rainbow and Tony Iommi was with Black Sabbath. Robert said in an interview that he loathe that song which baffles me that old bloke then why write it in the first place with Jimmy. That song made him and the other fellas millionaires. It is a masterpiece of art like the others . Personally, Jimmy Page’s best known guitar solo was “Heartbreaker” than “Stairway”.
I always though “Kashmir” was the one that tops it for me . I know at the O2 nine years back he couldn’t sing the way he did 40 years back and its understandable nor does Elton John we are not young men any more Long Live the Blimp’s music.

Anyway I look forward to the new museworthy project let us know what it is or pictures you have in mind. I enjoyed the last project we did. and give us something we can be inspired. and we will make you proud.

      Derek,

I agree with you about the Spirit song. The lawsuit probably should have been thrown out and never gone to court. I saw an article recently that the lawyer who argued the case against Led Zeppelin has since been suspended from practicing law for misconduct in another copyright infringement case.

I also seem to recall Plant saying that about Stairway in an interview. My guess is that he’s probably just become tired of it. Sometimes creators grow to despise their creations. But I’m with you about the song; it’s really masterful. Brilliantly crafted. It’s not in my top five favorite Zep songs but is absolutely a stirring and effective work, both lyrically and musically. Page’s guitar solo is haunting.

The topic of the next Museworthy show is discussed here:

but please email me Derek if you have any questions at all!

Thanks, as always, for your comments. Hope you’ve been well friend, and give my regards to Peta 🙂

Enjoyed the video — a great version of a true classic — thanks! I did wonder, though — are we sure that’s what Ozzy really said? I mean, I haven’t understood a word that he’s said in years.

      Bill,

Ozzy is a burn-out but still has strong opinions! Whether he expresses them coherently is a separate matter 😆

The concert video is a great rendition of the song. Really powerful and they just look and sound fantastic. Forty years ago, and there’s been nothing like them since.

      Thanks for your comments!
